Dental Sealants: A Shield Against Cavities
Sealants are a thin, protective coating made of dental material (comparable to nail polish) that adheres to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth (molars and premolars). These teeth have deep grooves and pits where food and bacteria easily get trapped.
Even with good brushing, bristles often cannot reach the bottom of these tiny grooves. Sealants act as a barrier, "sealing out" plaque and food.
Who Should Get Sealants?
While sealants can benefit anyone with deep grooves, they are most commonly recommended for:
- Children (Ages 6-14): As soon as the first permanent molars erupt (around age 6) and the second molars (around age 12), they should be sealed. This protects them during the most cavity-prone years.
- Teenagers: To protect teeth that might have deep pits.
- Adults: If you have deep grooves that haven't yet decayed, sealants can save you from future fillings.
The Procedure: Quick & Painless
Getting sealants is simple and requires no drilling or anesthesia:
- The tooth is cleaned and dried.
- An acidic gel is applied to roughen the surface slightly (for better bonding).
- The liquid sealant is painted into the grooves.
- A special light hardens the sealant in seconds.
How Long Do They Last?
Sealants can protect teeth for up to 10 years, but they need to be checked at regular dental checkups for chipping or wear. At Agaram Dental Clinic, we can easily repair or replace them if needed.
